The Belize Zoo is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Located about 30 miles west of Belize City on the George Price Highway, it is home to over 175 species of animals native to Belize, including jaguars, howler monkeys, tapirs, and scarlet macaws. While the zoo is easily accessible by car or taxi, it is also possible to get there by public transportation. Here’s what you need to know.

  1. Buses: The most affordable way to get to the Belize Zoo is by taking a bus. There are two bus companies that run buses from Belize City to Belmopan, the capital of Belize, which passes right by the zoo. These are James Bus Line and Westline Bus. Both bus lines leave from the Novelo’s Bus Terminal in Belize City, located on North Front Street. Buses run from early morning until late evening, with a frequency of about every 30 minutes during peak hours.
  2. Taxi: Taxis are also an option for getting to the Belize Zoo. You can easily flag down a taxi in Belize City, and the ride will take about 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis are more expensive than buses, but they offer the convenience of door-to-door service.
  3. Tour Operators: Many tour operators in Belize City offer packages that include transportation to the zoo, as well as a guided tour of the zoo. This option is more expensive than taking public transportation, but it can be a good option if you want a hassle-free experience.
  4. Rental Car: If you have access to a rental car, driving to the zoo is straightforward. From Belize City, you will need to take the George Price Highway (also known as the Western Highway) toward Belmopan. The zoo is located at Mile 29 on the highway, and there are clear signs indicating the entrance.

Once you arrive at the zoo, you can purchase your tickets at the entrance. The zoo is open daily from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with the last admission at 4:15 pm. Guided tours are available for an additional fee, and are highly recommended for getting the most out of your visit.

It’s important to note that public transportation in Belize can be unreliable, especially during peak hours and on weekends. Buses can get crowded, and delays due to traffic or breakdowns are not uncommon. If you’re taking public transportation to the zoo, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to get there.

Overall, while getting to the Belize Zoo by public transportation may require some extra effort, it is a viable option for budget-conscious travelers who want to experience the best of what Belize has to offer.
