How to Make Belize Fry Jacks

Belize Fry Jacks are a popular breakfast food in Belize. They are deep-fried dough pieces that can be served with various toppings such as honey, jam, or refried beans. Here is a recipe to make Belize Fry Jacks:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Vegetable oil for frying

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add the shortening to the bowl and use a pastry cutter or a fork to cut it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse sand.
  3. Slowly add the warm water to the bowl, mixing the dough with your hands until it comes together and is slightly sticky.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 2-3 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough back in the bowl and cover it with a damp towel. Let it rest for 15-20 minutes.
  6. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or a Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
  7. Divide the dough into 8-10 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
  8. Flatten each ball into a thin circle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  9. Fry the dough circles in the hot oil, turning them once, until they are golden brown and puffy, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  10. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the Fry Jacks to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  11. Serve the Fry Jacks hot, with your choice of toppings such as honey, jam, or refried beans.

Enjoy your delicious Belize Fry Jacks, a classic breakfast food that’s easy to make and perfect for a lazy weekend morning.
